Downtown Taitung

The downtown area starts from Zhongzheng Road and south to the seashore. The downtown is considered to be the origin of Taitung. Visitors who like to experience a different cultures can stroll down the streets to enjoy the timeless charm and the great food tradition. For those who love being out in nature, there is the Taitung Forest Park.

You may not know that there is a destination not far from Taitung City that has a remarkable resemblance to the Stone Carving Parks in Yeliu, this is the Taitung Fugang Geopark, also known as Xiaoyeliu. Located at the southernmost tip of the east coast, the park is named for having similar stones and landscapes to Yeliu in the north.

The Fugang Geopark is a natural geopark in Taitung. Vaccinium Fig grows on large coral reefs, making it appear to be an exotic tropical forest. Walk along the seaside walkway where you are surrounded by tall greenery and you’ll feel transported to a tropical resort. There are also shaded pagodas around the park where you can take a break and look out at the boats traveling between Green Island, Fugang Harbor, and Orchid Island. Finally, listen to the rhythmic crashing waves and allow them to wash away all of your troubles.

Some photo ops that you can’t miss include the wide-eyed frog, camel stone, and turtle rocks. Come and admire the fun shapes that mother nature has created. Thousands of years of tectonic shifts and erosion have made the tofu rock, mushroom rock, hive rock, slanted rock, turtle rocks, and many magical and fantastic-looking stones, making the geopark one of the most interactive geological classrooms. The geopark truly is one of nature’s best presents to man.

Are you interested in seeing a different side of Xiaoyelilu? Every year, between May and October, the special and fun “nighttime Xiaoyeliu” activity is hosted, where volunteer guides will show you the nighttime ecosystem of Xiaoyeliu. Participants will even have the chance to observe hermit crabs, toads, and a variety of other organisms up close.

The geopark has complete facilities, including the visitor information center, shopping street, food court, camping area, and seaside walkway. The visitor center also houses a geographical display room with a model of the entire Xiaoyeliu Park. Parts of the geopark are currently under remodeling construction. The visitor center, shopping, and camping area are currently closed with construction scheduled to be complete at the end of this year. The remodeling construction is sure to revamp the space to offer even better service for visitors once finished.
