Fengzai Pastries introduce

Fengzai pastries are the county pastries and the unique mooncakes in Taitung. Fengzai pastries look like a hybrid between mung bean pastries and sun cakes. Fengzai pastries filled with a rich and hearty mung bean paste filling with thin milky shortcrust. Although the looking of pastry is simple, it is the most nostalgic taste of ancient times. The Fengzai pastry was created during the Japanese occupation when food and materials were scarce. People longed to celebrate the Moon Festival but could not afford to buy the delicate Guangzhou styled moon cakes nor egg yolk pastries. The pastry chef then used mung beans as the filling and put them in the oven to bake them into round pastries. These pastries were wrapped in paper, ten pastries in a log. The unit for a strip or log in Taiwanese is “feng”, and thus, the name “Fengzai pastry” was born.
