Stinky tofu is the spotlight of the dining table at Hey Stinky! You will find it in the appetizer, main, and desert, one ‘smelly’ dish after another will blow foodies away. Are you planning an east coast vacation? Don’t forget to plan to visit “Hey! Stinky” on your trip for an unforgettable dining experience.
A-tang, the owner uses the traditional Sanyi, Miaoli fermentation process. He collects wild amaranth from the mountains to create the enzymes and ferment the tofu in large clay pots. The tofu made in this process has a unique smell, the natural fermentation process is beneficial to the body. A-tang is originally from Pingtung. After visiting Taitung, he fell in love with the ocean and decided to stay in Dulan and share this unique fragrance. As for why the restaurant is named “Hey! Stinky” (Ask Stinky)? A-Tang says the “ask” part comes from curiosity, and “stinky” is the one missing flavor of “sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, and salty”. He hopes that people won’t just assimilate “stinky” with foul-scented things.
Here at Hey! Stinky, you can taste innovative dishes you won’t find anywhere else. “Sashimi Stinky Tofu” is made by slicing the tofu into the same thickness as sashimi fish. Each slice of tofu is garnished with onions, kumquat sauce, perilla leaves, mustard, roselle, and other sauces. The heat and acidity are intensified to bring a new tasting experience with every bite. The pesto in the “Stinky Pasta” is hand-made using stinky tofu. The flavors are rich and highly recommended by all who have tasted the dish. “Blue Cheese Stinky Tofu Gratin” is made with grilled cheese over the tofu. The two strong scents pair perfectly that really hit the spot! The owner is thoughtful. He serves some special refreshments between the dishes. A small glass of “wild berry enzyme”, “beetroot soup” and “bitter roast tea” will help cleanse the tastes lingering in your mouth so that you are ready for the next dish.
