When visiting Changbin, the dream is always to take a stroll on the beautiful coast while enjoying some delicious ice cream! The dream has come true this summer! The first ice cream shop “Mini Gelato” has opened in Changbin, offering gelato and other ice creams. More excitingly, the owner, Ilid Kaolo, is a winner of the Best Aboriginal Singer in the Golden Melody Awards.

Ilid Kaolo is an Amis from Hualien. She moved to Changbin and started a business there because of her daughter. Ilid Kaolo wants her daughter to grow up in an Amis environment. When asked why she chose to open a gelato store, she said, “I love doing things that bring happiness to people. I wanted to make large scoops of ice cream for each customer and see their big smiles!” As you walk into the front yard, you’ll see Ilid and her husband Guanyu serving customers by the freezer. As they hand over the ice cream cones, customers receive more than just a fresh and sweet treat, but a little happiness in life.

Ilid Kaolo uses seasonal fresh fruits and incorporates milky flavors to make a refreshing and delicious frozen treat. The ice cream is with a lower fat content than American-styled ice cream! The classic flavor “Changbin brown sugar sea salt” uses brown sugar and sea salt which produced from the east coast of Taiwan, milk is also added to complete this locally popular gelato. “Rum Raisin” uses a generous amount of rum. The rum-infused raisins are paired with milk to create a fragrant and decadent gelato. “Tiramisu” has bold coffee and cocoa flavors. The silky-smooth texture also makes this one of the crowd favorites. Ilid Kaolo tells us that she also offers “no-menu flavors” from time to time. If you’re lucky enough, you might be able to find flavors such as “Plantain Soy Milk”, “Mint Pineapple Moscato” among others!
