Taitung has a very diversity and rich ethnic culture. Those historical buildings in downtown can be traced back to Qing Dynasty, Japanese Colonial Period and Taiwan Recovery period. Baoting Art and Culture Center is one example of the unique architecture. It was built in 1936 during Taiwan under Japanese rule period as mayor’s residence and the town hall. The traditional Japanese house is charming and remains the tranquil atmosphere.
Chinese temples and churches are another place to enjoy local cultures as well as study traditional architecture. These temples provide not only a place to practice religion but a common location for social gatherings. Visitors can also spend the day socializing and enjoying the local desserts such as green bean soup, sweet potato chips and mochi.
