Did you know that Chenggong Township used to be home to the busiest harbors on the east coast? When returning to Chenggong Township from Shiyusan, you’ll pass by two historical buildings, Chengguang’ao Cultural Landscape and Chengguang’ao Tianhou Temple. Chengguang’ao harbor is a natural deep-water port, merchants had been using this port since the end of the Ming Dynasty. The largest store at the time was run by Guanghengfa Company. The building has a Baroque Chinese architectural arch and a brick-laid pedestrian arcade. The 2nd World War and highway construction has destroyed everything but the arch and arcade. Visitors must use their imagination to recreate what the prosperous harbor used to look like. The Chengguang’ao Tianhou Temple was built during Tongzhi emperor’s reign in the Qing Dynasty. It is the oldest Mazu temple in Taitung County and a vital part of the local religion. It is said that the painting on the arches and pillars is done by Plains indigenous peoples, the color selection is unique and worth the visit.
