知本森林遊樂區宛如一間生態教室，海拔高度110~650公尺，全年氣候溫暖濕潤。沿著區內的林蔭步道行走，主要景觀有常綠闊葉樹次生林、百年大白榕、臺灣蝴蝶蘭、百年酸藤、知本溪流、藥用植物園區等。旅人能隨著沿路的解說牌了解各種動植物，尤以鳥類資源最豐富，是臺東市郊賞鳥的最佳地點。
此外，野營活動場適合露營，或與三五好友來個輕鬆的野餐，享受一天芬多精的幽靜午後，與大自然來場近距離約會。
